Cycle Tourism

According to one of my new favorite websites, Copenhagenize, many European countries like Germany, Hungary and the Czech Republic are investing beaucoup dollars and resources to increase cycle tourism.

In the U.S. we haven’t accepted cyclists yet as bona fide partners on the road, nor do we have the infrastructure to support cycle tourism in a broad sense.  We can dream though….

From Copenhagenize:

“While most of my work deals with increasing bicycle traffic in cities through infrastructure and positive marketing, I have been in the loop about cycle tourism on many of the visits I’ve made to other cities and regions. It’s an interesting area of growth. Some countries are investing heavily in cycle tourism and Germany is the grand old man in the industry. Czech Republic and Hungary, too, are focusing on getting more cycle tourists to visit their regions.”

I think this is an exciting time to be touring in America. My hope is that we are on the cusp of a new interest in touring by bicycle. Adventure Cycling Association’s membership is growing, more models of touring bikes are available and people seem interested in finding more eco-friendly ways to vacation. I really hope that as more and more of us take to the roads by bicycle things like driver awareness, infrastructure and product development will follow.

    Great post, Jack

Jack, Thanks and I like your take on the direction of bike touring in our country. You make a good point that things are looking up for cycling in general and bike touring specifically. My husband and I took our first two tours this year – and will definitely take more next year. It is a great way to see whatever area you vacation in. I like your optimism that as more of us ride, the rest of what’s needed will follow. Thanks for your comment.
