“Romancing the bike: The seduction of pedal-powered transport”

By Christine Grant

may

“I fell in love with cycling during six months I spent traveling the world’s great bicycle cities. The ease, safety, convenience … (dreamy sigh)

But as my trip came to an end, I began to realize the reason for my infatuation: Residents of cities like those in Denmark and Holland inject cycling with fun, whimsy, and even romance.

Certainly, many Americans love their bikes, but even more of us would if we learned these five lessons on cycling’s soft side from the world’s active-transport capitals.”

Sunday Ride

Yesterday, we mixed things up a bit. Translation: we tend to ride the same routes, the same way and didn’t. Do you usually ride the same routes?

We noticed a freshly paved, HILLY road while riding to Jones a week or so ago and yesterday we decided to give it a ride. It was like one long, curly ribbon of a road. It was hard, but fun.

I need to take a photo of it, want to for my Project 365 anyway. When I do I’ll post it here so you can see how cool it looks.

I’ve had requests to post my Garmin info so here it is for this ride:  http://bit.ly/KfkbSH

Mavic Pedals

I ordered new pedals today, thankfully. I research things to death!

    mavic pedals

  • Lightweight aluminum body with carbon composite rear-friction plates and titanium 6V spindle for a nearly "weightless", smooth and efficient pedaling experience

  • Energy Transfer System (ETS) uses a large cleat/pedal contact area to maximize energy transmission during all-out efforts

  • Adjustable release tension and optimized cleat/pedal release system provide 80-200kg/cm of modification

  • DuraCleat with wear-resistant zones offers 7° of angular float

  • Double QRM sealed cartridge bearings produce low friction and are easy to maintain

  • Additional cartridge needle bearing evenly distributes heavy loads

  • 220g (pair)

After I’ve ridden with them a few times, I’ll post a review.

Pedals

I need new pedals! And I don’t know what to get!

If I sound intense about this, it’s because I am.

I have always ridden with Looks, currently Look Keo Carbon. It’s time to replace them and I’m not sure I want to go with Look again.

Reason why:  the cleats wear extremely fast and for that matter the pedals do too; although that may not be fair because I have about 10,000 miles on these.

I’m considering Shimano Ultegra 6700 or Dura-Ace 7900, Forte Pro CFR (Performance Bike brand) and Campagnolo Record Pro-Fit Plus.

Because of my shoes I need to go with 3 bolt pedals, and all of the pedals above comply.

I’ve found the Campagnolo’s for $259.00 – a steal, msrp is $425. The Ultegra I’ve found for $110, the Dura-Ace are similar to Campy’s in cost and the Forte are the cheapest at $89.

Truth: My bike is clad in Campagnolo sans the wheels and current pedals. I would like to get the Campy pedals but I don’t need or feel right about getting Campy Record; they are more than I need. They don’t make them in Chorus or Centaur, however.

What’s a girl to do??

Are you in love with any Look compatible pedals? What are they and why do you love them?

Anyone have any experience with any Campagnolo pedal?

Threatening Rain

Today’s bike ride looked like it might not happen. As we were ready to leave, a quick look outside showed dark clouds. A quick check of the radar showed nothing so off we went.

The whole day was like that! Cloudy, with dark looking thunder clouds in the vicinity but no rain.

What we did have was calm wind, overcast sky and mild temperatures – oh, and high humidity, but nothing is perfect.

The ride was a nice one, 55 miles, which gives me 135 for the week. Not bad and the skies cleared up toward the end.

Hope the weather is cooperating with you so you can ride. I’m uploading rides to Endomondo to participate in the National Bike Challenge. Consider joining the team, “All for the Love of Bikes”.

Today’s ride:  NBC 04/28/12
