For the Love of Bikes

Life is better on a bike!

A Hollywood Moment

Turns out LeBron James isn’t the only NBA star who rides a bike.

Mark and I were out riding to the east today when a large black SUV pulled alongside, windows down. When I looked to see what was going on (they weren’t passing us) there were two guys with large professional type cameras taking pictures of us! I grinned and then hoped I didn’t have dried snot on my face! It was cold – and well if you ride you know what happens with the cold. We can only hope my face (the little bit showing) was clean.

A camera taking pictures while out riding was a first to say the least. A car passing you slowly puts you on alert – for something being thrown, obscenities yelled – never a camera taking pictures of you pedaling.

A couple of miles further down the road, the crew was all standing in the middle of the intersection snapping away. We stopped and talked with them for a bit; turns out they’re from LA working on a Degree deodorant commercial with Kevin Durant bicycling and apparently they were out today scouting locations. KD wasn’t around, it would be hard to miss him on a bike!

You never know what you’re going to see when you’re riding. =)

Happy New Year!

new-year-image2013 is the fourth year we’ve rung in together!

Like many of you this is the time I set resolutions/goals for the new year and check to see what I accomplished (and didn’t) with the goals/resolutions I set in the year just ending.

I fell short of my mileage goal for 2012 (3200 miles was my goal, finished with 2961) which has made me more focused not to let it happen again. I typically do everything in my power to make sure I hit my mileage goals – usually picking up the pace in the latter part of the year and meeting or surpassing them. That didn’t happen this year (with cycling, running I exceeded my goal but who cares) which motivates me even more to do better this year.

Additionally, I’m thinking about what I want to do here on All for the Love of Bikes which I’ll discuss later on.

Stupidly perhaps, I increased my mileage goal to 3500 miles for 2013. That’s an average of just over 67 miles a week, I know it’s doable, I’ve done much more than that in the past – I just have to create more opportunities to ride.

One way to do that is to ride when I’m running errands close in, commuting to my volunteer “job” and by doing many other short rides. Biking for me in the past centered on long fitness rides. Last year I changed that somewhat by doing more short, half an hour or so rides and more commutes, but I need to do it more regularly.

Why not? I enjoy riding, it’s good for me and the more of us out there riding, particularly dressed like “Jane Q Public” and not like “Cyclist Jane” the more inclined other’s will be to ride. It is a proven fact that more people riding results in – well… more people riding. A wonderful cycle of cycling!

What about you, have you set any riding goals for this year? Want to share your goals here – we’d all love to hear them.

Product Review: Monkeysee Harness

Recently I received my first product to do a review of – the Monkeysee Reflective Harness.

DSCF7005

The monkeysee harness is just the type of product anyone can use – whether you’re walking, riding a bike, running or whatever. In my quest to be as visible as possible to drivers when I’m riding the harness works well and is a snap to put on. It also comes in a variety of colors, all of which are reflective.

The harness is extremely lightweight and easily goes over whatever you happen to be wearing. I have a reflective vest and jacket, but I don’t wear them every time I ride. The monkeysee harness is such that I can keep it in my bike trunk or jersey pocket and quickly put it on. This time of year with the gray overcast days, the harness can easily be worn to make you more visible during the day too.

Before I received it I envisioned I would only wear it when biking in the evenings, but I will also wear it when I walk or run at night – or on those overcast days. It’s easy to put on, comfortable (doesn’t bind) and easy to adjust. It comes in small, medium and large and fits true to size.

I see the monkeysee harness as another tool to keep me as safe as possible – remember you can’t be too visible!

Watch this video to see the harness in action. For more information about ordering visit the monkeysee website at: http://www.monkeysee.net.au/ Check out the other products they have available to increase your visibility.
